SS-31 Is a Novel Mitochondrial-Targeted Therapy That Crosses Blood-Brain Barrier

Mitochondria play a vital role in cellular metabolism. Because of their widespread effects on cellular functions, mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in a wide range of diseases. As such, mitochondria, the tiny energy factories found in most cells, are prime targets for drug development. But developing mitochondria-targeted drugs has been a daunting task.

Pediatric Voiding Dysfunction - Evaluation

To achieve a comprehensive urodynamics assessment, we perform a number of tests simultaneously, which allows us to determine the status of the kidneys, bladder and urethra. Together these tests provide valuable information about bladder capacity, voiding and bladder pressure.

The Institute for Pediatric Urology

The Institute for Pediatric Urology opened in 2007 and specializes in the evaluation and treatment of urologic issues ranging from spinal cord abnormalities to acquired voiding issues. The Institute's integrated team of specialists offers comprehensive services for children by providing state-of-the-art techniques for correcting or minimizing urologic disorders. Physicians working in the Institute have developed minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, genital reconstruction, and treatment of vesicoureteral reflux.

Pediatric Voiding Dysfunction - Symptoms

Pediatric patients can present with any number of symptoms that can help differentiate a pathologic cause of a voiding disorder.

Symptoms may include:

Pediatric Kidney Health (Laparoscopic Nephrectomy)

Initially, laparoscopy had limited diagnostic and therapeutic uses. With the advent of automatic clip appliers, stapling devices, impermeable organ removal bags, and morcellating devices, the scope of procedures that can be performed laparoscopically has been broadened substantially. In urology, such advances have allowed for laparoscopic varicocelectomies, bladder augmentations, urinary diversions, ureterolysis, adrenalectomies, nephrectomies, and nephro-ureterectomies. We now have performed over 50 laparoscopic nephrectomies on children at our center. Our director, Dr.
